Recently I found out that the fourth computer in the world to be built was designed and built in Australia. In 1949 a young scientist at CISRO proposed and got funding for a project to build a computer. The project was successful and the computer was built. It took about a year and soon after it was complete it was donated to Melbourne University where it was used to execute programs and calculations for about a decade. The computer is now at the Museum of Melbourne where it can be seen in its reassembled state. As I walked through the room hosting the computer I could not help but think back to Reiknistofnun and the old geeks I used to work with over there. They would have fitted perfectly in these settings as young men, with hair. There are even pictures at Reiknistofnun where it looks like they are in that very room. In fact, I think that might be Maríus’s chair in the picture!

This weekend we went to see the exhibition ‘A day in Pompei’ at the Melbourne Museum. Suzy was very impressed with the whole exhibition and I enjoyed parts of it. The casts of the people who died are surely the most powerful part of the exhibition, they really take you back to the very moment when the blast hit the city and people were engulfed by the ash. It is very moving to see the people in the very position they were in when it all happened. The other parts of the exhibit showed items from the city of Pompei recovered by archaeologists. It struck me how their implements are much like ours. I should have found that amazing but I just found it boring; 2000 year old household items that look just like what you see at any old market today. Suzy was a bit more sensible though and enjoyed how the exhibition brought live in the city right before your very eyes. The exhibition also depicted the story and timeline of the actual event but there were such a huge crowd that we could not really be bothered discovering more than we already knew about the event. The 3D animation was probably pretty good though.

It keeps taking us by surprise how quickly the seasons can change here in Melbourne. Two days ago I took a look at the tree outside our window to see if there were any signs of new leafs but there were none. Spring officially starts on September the 1st and admittedly we have had some nice warm days since then, but nothing like yesterday. The temp rose to 29 degrees and when I looked back at the trees this morning there were new leafs already forming. It only took one warm spring day to trigger the trees into action. The weather is still not consistently warm but each day the temperature is slowly rising towards summertime.

The Icelandic Króna has been falling in the past few months. When I moved to Australia in September last year I could buy 52 krónas for one dollar, now I can buy 74 krónas for a dollar. This is good news for me at the moment but not for Icelanders thinking of coming over here. The króna went up to 80 per dollar in recent days and apparently that is the best conversion ratio from dollar to króna that there has ever been. To keep tabs on the development I have now made the currency part of this website fetch real live data from yahoo finance. Under Australia vs. Iceland on the right hand side you can see what the mean conversion is.

Tonight I sat down and charted the sailing routes from Melbourne to Reykjavík. An unusual thing to do on a Sunday night I know but I have been wondering about this for a long time now: when (yes when, not if) I set sail from Australia to Iceland, what route should I take? Well, first I have to see what options I have so I sat down and charted the options. There are six possibilities:

North-west passage

North-east passage

Panama canal

Cape Horn

Cape of good hope

Suez canal

On the map above you can see how these different routes would be sailed from Melbourne. As roaring forties blow from west to east past the south coast of Australia the most sensible option is to go east then north and later turn west in the case of Suez and Cape of good hope. Applications for prospective crew positions are now open. ETA for departure: 06am on the 2nd of May 2018.

+ Map of routes

We have just made a complete change of tack in our residency plans since my last post. This week we found a little apartment in Melbourne City that we were really happy with and decided to put the boat plans on hold for a while. Provided the bank will approve our application for a home loan we will be the proud owners of an apartment in King Street by next week. The change came in the wake of some thoughts on the practicality of living on board a yacht in Melbourne for a significant amount of time. We are very happy with this decision and the fact that we are not over extending our selves on the amount we are paying for the apartment we expect to be able to buy a small sailing boat within the next 12 months.

It has been a while since last wrote a entry here and the reason for it is simply that I have been too busy. My entry backlog goes back as far as Melbourne Cup day and there is plenty since then to tell of. Lets start with Cup day. Melbourne Cup is called “the race that stops a nation” and I can attest that it is true. Australians take a very casual approach to public holiday timing. Most of the Australian public holidays aren’t that ‘Holy’, they are more days of convenience and the dates get moved around to suit the mood. They move the Queens birthday to a more convenient time and most other public holidays are put on a Monday or Friday to provide a long weekend to go away. Melbourne Cup day is a public holiday in the state of Victoria. A day of Horse Racing is a Public Holiday! How Australian is that! Cup day is even not on a Monday or Friday, but Tuesday. Melbourne goes crazy for a whole week while the races are on. It all starts with Darby Day and reaches a highpoint on Cup Day. People dress up in their finest garb. Glamorous long dresses for the ladies, hats, high heals and fine accessories. Suits, tuxes and often vintage clothing for the men. They then stock up on champagne and other intoxicating beverages and head off to the race course. During this week the trains will be full to capacity with finely dressed folks who later in the day will often be very drunk. It certainly is an interesting time to be in the city. I’d never seen a horse race before Cup Day. Our local pub ‘The King of Tonga’ put on a Cup Day event witch we attended. Steve had arranged for a large screen, food and some fun. I was quite surprised to find that I really enjoyed the TV broadcast from the race. It was very exciting. The race only takes about 3 minutes, after which the winner will have acquired $5 million and the rest of Australia get really drunk. We had a wonderful time and I look forward to the next Cup day. One of the greatest things about Melbourne is that when big sporting events are on the whole city participates!

‘barbie on the beach’), bjór og léttvín, ódýrt drasl og umfram allt landið sitt.

Summer is well on its way this year. The temperature today is forecast to hit 31°C which means about 35°C here by the beach side. On such days there is really just one thing to do; go to the beach. Today though we will be visiting a friend of Suzanne´s who is having a BBQ for friends at his home in Ferntree Gully, and yes that is just as far out of town as it sounds. We´ll be spending more than an hour on the train and then cycle the rest. Ah, the lengths you go to for a good barbie here in Australia! Like my friend at the PHP club said about why Australians love sports so much, even the ones you aren’t really into; “… any excuse to crack a beer”. Having said that, its time for me to head off to the Croquet lawns.
